Check PDF Metadata Before Sharing a Document

Find author and title metadata in a PDF, remove what should not be shared, and verify the cleaned download.

Look beyond the visible page

A PDF can carry document properties such as title, author, creation software and dates. For example, a quotation may show only a company name on the page while its author property still contains an employee's name. Removing metadata helps with that kind of accidental disclosure. It does not hide names or account numbers printed on the page.

Start with the Document Privacy Checker to see what the file contains. Note which fields matter to the recipient and which should be removed. Then open the Remove PDF Metadata tool, select the same file and create a cleaned copy.

Verify a concrete result

Suppose the original properties say “Author: Alex” and “Title: Internal quotation draft.” After cleaning, download the new file and open its document properties in a PDF reader. Confirm those fields are gone or have the values you expect. Also inspect the visible pages, comments and attachments. Those may need separate work because they are not necessarily document metadata.

Changing a PDF may invalidate a digital signature. Preserve the signed original and confirm whether the recipient accepts a modified copy. If you need to hide visible text permanently, use a PDF redaction tool and check that the concealed text cannot be selected or copied.

Before sending

Name the cleaned copy clearly so you do not accidentally send the original. Check the file content and the recipient once more. The tool processes the PDF in your browser; storage, backups and sending the download remain under your control.
