What Is PDF Metadata?

PDF files can contain hidden information such as the title, author, creation date, software used to create the file, keywords, and XMP metadata. This information is usually not visible on the page itself but can be extracted by anyone who receives the file.

How to Remove PDF Metadata

What Gets Removed

Document properties (title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, dates) are stored in the PDF's Info dictionary. XMP metadata is a separate XML stream that may contain similar or additional information. Custom properties are user-defined key-value pairs. Attachments and annotations are separate objects that may contain their own metadata.

What Stays Unchanged

When you only clean document properties, the page content, images, fonts, page sizes and visible text remain unchanged. Advanced options that remove attachments, annotations or form data may affect the document content.

Data & Privacy

Your PDF is processed entirely in your browser. No file content, file name, or metadata is uploaded to any server. When you close or refresh the page, all data is cleared. You should verify the cleaned file meets your requirements before sharing it.

Limitations

Encrypted PDFs cannot be processed. Some PDF software may store additional information in proprietary formats. Re-saving a PDF may invalidate digital signatures. This tool re-checks the output file, but cannot guarantee removal of all proprietary or historical data.
