What is PDF redaction?
PDF redaction is the permanent removal of sensitive content from a PDF document. True redaction deletes the underlying text and drawing instructions from the file, so the information cannot be selected, searched, copied or recovered. Stamping black rectangles over the page is not redaction - the text underneath stays fully recoverable. Qudo's redactor rewrites each marked page's content stream and removes the text runs inside your redaction boxes, flattening a page into an image only when the content cannot be removed surgically. Everything runs locally in your browser.
How to Redact a PDF
- Upload or drop your PDF file - it never leaves your device.
- Draw redaction boxes over sensitive areas, or drag across text lines to mark them exactly.
- Optionally turn on sensitive data detection or use Find & Redact, then review and confirm each result - nothing is applied automatically.
- Click Apply Redactions and confirm: the marked text is deleted from the file, not covered.
- Check the verification results and download your redacted PDF.
PDF Redaction vs Black Boxes
A black rectangle placed on a PDF is a drawing on top of the page; the original text remains inside the file and can be copied, searched or revealed with free tools in seconds. Real redaction modifies the document itself: the selected text runs are physically removed from the page's content stream, so nothing remains underneath the cover. This tool deletes the content first and only then draws the opaque rectangle, and it re-reads the finished file to verify that the redacted text is no longer extractable.
What Information Can You Redact?
- Names, addresses and other personal identifiers
- Social Security numbers and government ID numbers
- Email addresses and phone numbers
- Credit card, bank account and payment details
- Dates of birth and patient or case reference numbers
- IP addresses, URLs and internal file paths
- Confidential clauses, figures and trade secrets
- Legal, medical and financial records
Redacting Scanned PDFs
Scanned PDFs are photos of pages, so there is no selectable text - but the pixels still contain the sensitive content. Use Redact Area to draw boxes over them: marked pages of scanned documents are flattened into images with the redaction burned in, which removes the underlying picture data as well. If your scanner added an invisible OCR text layer, the redactor's text removal and sanitizing steps clear that too.
Common Use Cases
- Share a contract without exposing prices, addresses or signatures
- Release legal or court documents with party names blacked out permanently
- Send a medical or lab report with patient identifiers removed
- Publish a financial statement without client account numbers
- Remove emails and phone numbers from invoices before forwarding them
- Redact personal data in documents kept long-term or archived
- Prepare government or compliance reports with classified sections removed
- Strip hidden metadata, annotations and form data before publishing
