This tool helps you calculate profit margin, markup, selling price, discounts and break-even price. It clearly distinguishes between margin and markup — two concepts that are often confused but produce very different numbers.

Margin vs Markup

Margin and markup are different. A 20% margin corresponds to a 25% markup. Always check which metric you are using, especially when setting prices or negotiating with suppliers.

Break-even Price

The break-even price is the minimum selling price to avoid loss. With unit cost $80 and 10% platform commission: Break-even = 80 ÷ (1 − 0.10) = $88.89.

How Platform Commissions Affect Profit

If a platform charges 10% commission on selling price, a $100 sale yields only $90 revenue. Your real profit is $10 (not $20), and real margin is 10% (not 20%). Always account for commission as a price-based fee.

What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin = Profit ÷ Price × 100%. Markup = Profit ÷ Cost × 100%. A 20% margin equals a 25% markup. They are different metrics.
How do I calculate profit margin?
Subtract cost from price to get profit, then divide by price and multiply by 100%. Example: (100 − 80) ÷ 100 × 100% = 20%.

Subtract cost from price to get profit, then divide by cost and multiply by 100%. Example: (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100% = 25%.
Does 20% markup equal 20% margin?
No. 20% markup on $80 gives price $96, margin = 16.67%. 20% margin on $80 gives price $100, markup = 25%.
How to calculate selling price from target margin?
Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Target Margin). For cost $80 and 20% margin: Price = 80 ÷ 0.80 = $100.
How to tell if a discount causes a loss?
Compare discounted price with total cost. If discounted price < cost, you are selling at a loss.
How to calculate break-even price?
If there are no price-based fees: Break-even = Total Cost. With price-based fees: Break-even = Cost ÷ (1 − Fee Rate).
How should platform commission be counted?
Commission based on selling price should be entered as a '% of Price' fee, not as a fixed amount. This ensures accurate profit calculation.
Should tax be included in profit?
It depends on the tax system. Generally, collected sales tax/VAT is not part of revenue. This tool excludes tax by default.
Why can't markup be calculated when cost is 0?
Markup = Profit ÷ Cost. Division by zero is undefined. If cost is 0, any profit represents an infinite markup.
Why can't margin be calculated when price is 0?
Margin = Profit ÷ Price. Division by zero is undefined. If price is 0, there is no revenue to measure margin against.
Can this tool be used with different currencies?
You can change the currency symbol, but all amounts must use the same currency. No exchange rate conversion is performed.
