About Date Difference Calculator

This tool calculates the exact difference between two dates using calendar-based algorithms. Unlike simple millisecond subtraction, our calculation handles leap years, month-end dates, and daylight saving time correctly.

How to Calculate Date Difference

Enter your start date and end date using the date pickers or type them directly. Click 'Calculate Difference' to see the results. You can swap dates, use quick ranges, or customize the counting method.

Calendar Difference vs Total Days

Calendar difference shows years, months, and days (e.g., 2 years 3 months 12 days). Total days is the actual count of calendar days between dates (e.g., 833 days). These are different ways of expressing the same time span.

Inclusive vs Exclusive Counting

Standard counting excludes the end date: Jan 1 to Jan 2 = 1 day. Inclusive counting includes both dates: Jan 1 to Jan 2 = 2 days. Choose based on your needs.

How Workdays Are Calculated

Workdays are calculated using an efficient algorithm that counts complete weeks first, then handles remaining days. This ensures fast calculation even for date ranges spanning hundreds of years.

Handling Holidays

This tool does not automatically include public holidays as they vary by country and region. You can add custom holidays to exclude them from workday calculations.

Leap Year Impact

Leap years affect date calculations. A leap year has 366 days instead of 365. When calculating across February 29, the extra day is properly accounted for.

Month-End Date Handling

When the target month doesn't have the same day (e.g., Jan 31 to Feb), the calculation uses the last valid day of the target month. For example, Jan 31 + 1 month = Feb 28 (or Feb 29 in leap years).

Why Not Use Millisecond Subtraction?

JavaScript's Date objects can produce incorrect results due to timezone differences, daylight saving time transitions, and browser inconsistencies. Our date-only model avoids these issues entirely.

Timezone and Daylight Saving Time

All calculations use calendar dates only, ignoring timezones and DST. This ensures consistent results regardless of your location or time of year.

Limitations

  • Calculations use the Gregorian calendar (from October 15, 1582)
  • Does not account for specific times within a day
  • Does not automatically include public holidays
  • Not suitable for legal or contractual deadline calculations

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the date difference calculated?▼
The calendar difference uses a borrowing algorithm similar to age calculation. Total days use Julian Day Number for accuracy.
Why are calendar difference and total days different?▼
Calendar difference expresses the span as years, months, and days. Total days is the actual count of days between dates.
Are workdays calculated correctly across DST changes?▼
Yes, we use calendar dates only, so DST transitions don't affect the results.
Can I calculate backwards (end before start)?▼
Yes, the tool shows the absolute difference and indicates the direction.
Are my dates uploaded to a server?▼
No, all calculations happen in your browser. Your dates are never sent to Qudo servers.
Does this tool include public holidays?▼
No, public holidays vary by country. You can add custom holidays to exclude them.
Is Jan 31 to Feb 28 one month?▼
Using our algorithm, yes. When the target month doesn't have the same day, we use the last valid day.
Can I use this for legal contracts?▼
This tool provides general calendar calculations. For legal deadlines, consult the relevant authorities.
