What is Office Document Hidden Information?
Office documents (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) contain more than just the visible content. They also store metadata such as author names, edit timestamps, company information, comments, revision history, hidden sheets, embedded objects and more. This hidden information may be inadvertently shared when you send or publish a file.
Why Check Before Sharing?
When you share an Office file, recipients may be able to see who created it, when it was modified, what comments were added and removed, and even access hidden data like embedded objects or external links. This can expose personal information, internal processes, or confidential data.
Supported File Formats
This tool supports DOCX (Word), XLSX (Excel) and PPTX (PowerPoint) files. These are the modern XML-based Office formats. Legacy binary formats (DOC, XLS, PPT) and macro-enabled formats (DOCM, XLSM, PPTM) are not supported for auto-cleaning.
What Can Be Checked and Cleaned?
The tool checks for: document properties (author, editor, company, timestamps), comments and revision history, hidden content (hidden text, hidden sheets, speaker notes), external links, embedded objects, custom XML data, macros and digital signatures. Low-risk items like metadata and comments can be safely cleaned.
How to Use
- Drag and drop or select your Office files (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX).
- Click 'Start Privacy Check' to scan for hidden information.
- Review the risk report and choose a cleanup mode.
- Confirm and generate a cleaned copy.
- Download the cleaned file and verify with Office software.
Local Processing & Privacy
All file processing happens entirely in your browser. Files are never uploaded to any server. The tool uses JSZip to read and repackage Office files, and standard browser APIs to parse XML content. No data is sent anywhere.
Why Keep the Original File?
The cleaning process modifies the internal structure of the Office file. While we validate the output, we cannot guarantee full compatibility with all Office versions. Always keep your original file as a backup, and open the cleaned file in Microsoft Office to verify before sharing.
Macros, Signatures & Encrypted Files
Files containing macros (VBA), ActiveX controls, or digital signatures can be inspected but are not auto-cleaned. Modifying these files may break the macros or invalidate signatures. Password-protected files cannot be processed at all.
Post-Cleanup Verification
After cleaning, the tool re-opens the generated file and checks: ZIP integrity, presence of required parts ([Content_Types].xml, main document), validity of modified XML, and absence of dangling references. Note that browser-based verification cannot replace full Microsoft Office compatibility testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are files uploaded to a server?
No. All processing is done entirely in your browser. Files never leave your device.
Are DOC, XLS and PPT supported?
No. Legacy binary formats are not supported. Please convert them to DOCX, XLSX or PPTX first.
Why not auto-delete all hidden content?
Some items like hidden sheets, external data connections, or embedded objects may be essential to the document's functionality. These are flagged for manual review.
Will cleaning affect formatting and formulas?
Low-risk cleaning (metadata, comments, author info) should not affect formatting or formulas. However, always verify the cleaned file before sharing.
Can password-protected files be processed?
No. Encrypted or password-protected Office files cannot be scanned or cleaned.
Will macros and VBA code be removed?
No. Macro-enabled files (DOCM, XLSM, PPTM) are detected but not auto-cleaned, as cleaning may break the macros.
Why might digital signatures be invalidated?
Digital signatures are based on the file's exact binary content. Any modification, including metadata removal, will break the signature.
Can deleted information be recovered?
Once cleaned, the information is removed from the new file. The original file is never modified, so you always have the original as backup.
Is batch processing supported?
Yes. You can upload multiple files at once. Each file is scanned and cleaned independently. Batch download as ZIP is available.
Why re-check after cleaning?
Browser-based cleaning can verify file structure but cannot guarantee full Office compatibility. We recommend opening the cleaned file in Microsoft Office to verify.
Does it work on mobile browsers?
Yes. The tool is responsive and works on mobile and tablet browsers.
Is there a file size limit?
The recommended maximum is 100 MB for desktop browsers and 50 MB for mobile. Larger files may cause performance issues.
