Frequently asked questions
Is Qudo PDF Toolbox free?
Yes. It is free and open source under AGPL-3.0. The single QudoPDF.exe costs nothing and has no ads, no account and no usage limits.
Does it upload my files anywhere?
No. Every operation runs locally on your computer. There is no server, no upload and no telemetry, which is exactly what makes it suitable for confidential documents.
Which operating systems are supported?
Windows 10 and Windows 11. The app ships as a single Windows executable; macOS and Linux are not currently supported.
Can it read scanned PDFs with OCR?
Not yet. Scanned documents need OCR before text extraction or editable Word export. Image-based pages can still be viewed, merged, cropped, compressed, watermarked and annotated.
What can the content editor actually do?
Insert text and images as floating elements you can drag and resize, edit existing page text inline, move existing text blocks and images, delete regions, and replace or delete images. Inserted elements can be resized; existing page content can be moved and re-typed but not resized.
Why is the license AGPL?
The app builds on PyMuPDF and pdf2docx, which are AGPL-3.0, so the project is AGPL-3.0 as well. Closed-source commercial distribution would require a commercial PyMuPDF license from Artifex.
License
Qudo PDF Toolbox is released under AGPL-3.0 because it depends on PyMuPDF (AGPL-3.0) and pdf2docx (AGPL-3.0). Other dependencies include PySide6 (LGPL), openpyxl, python-docx and Pillow (MIT), and numpy (BSD).
Known limitations
- No OCR: scanned documents need OCR before text extraction or editable Word export.
- Existing page content can be moved, re-typed and deleted, but not resized or rotated; floating elements can be resized.
- Edited or inserted text is rewritten with standard or system fonts, so glyph details may differ from the original embedded font.
- Vector graphics such as lines and shapes cannot yet be moved as a whole.
